The role of our oceans in mitigating climate change and storing carbon will be in focus at the two-day international conference Blue Carbon: Beyond the Inventory.

The conference will explore the research that has been published in Scotland and around the world, which is helping us better understand how blue carbon habitats like seagrass, kelp forests and saltmarshes, store carbon.

The event is being hosted during COP26 by the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum, in collaboration with the Scottish Government’s Marine Scotland directorate and the University of St Andrews.

The conference will gather both in person and online on Thursday 11 November and Friday 12 November, to discuss the scientific and policy facing issues which will support blue carbon developments in the context of the global climate emergency.

It will include policy and science talks, an add-on workshop by the Blue Carbon Initiative, networking opportunities and panel discussions to highlight current best practice as well as emerging opportunities going beyond the current frameworks, challenges and threats to Blue Carbon.

Confirmed sessions on the day include talks on the discovery of the world’s largest seagrass meadow in the Bahamas, and on the carbon that is found in fjords around Scotland. The full programme can be found online: https://www.bluecarbon.scot/blue-carbon-conference

The Scottish Blue Carbon Forum, funded by Scottish Government, was launched in 2018 and is the first of its kind in the UK. It brings together researchers from Scotland’s world leading universities to improve our understanding of blue carbon habitats and works directly with government to inform our approach to protection and restoration.
